attracting the wrong dental patients

You’re Getting New Patients… They’re Just Not the Right Ones

May 29, 20262 min read

Most practices want more new patients.

And a lot of them are getting them.

Phones are ringing.
New patients are coming in.
The schedule looks full.

But something doesn’t feel right.

The cases aren’t what you expected.
The production doesn’t match the volume.
You’re busy… but not in the way you want to be.

I see this a lot

A dentist will tell me:

“We’re getting a pretty good amount of new patients.”

Then a few minutes later:

“They’re mostly insurance.”
“Not a lot of bigger cases.”
“Not really what we’re trying to build.”

Here’s what’s actually happening

You’re not just getting more patients.

You’re attracting a certain type of patient.

And that type is being shaped by:

  • how you show up online

  • what you talk about

  • how your team communicates

  • what your systems reinforce

Quick example

A practice is investing in marketing.

They’re visible. Easy to find.

But everything about how they present themselves says:

👉 “General, insurance-friendly, quick and convenient”

So that’s who responds.

Not because that’s all this practice can do. But because that’s what they’re signaling.

Here's another version

A patient calls and asks about a specific service.

The response is:

“We can take a look when you come in.”

Technically correct.

But it doesn’t communicate:

  • experience

  • confidence

  • or focus

So the patient doesn’t learn anything different.

And when nothing stands out…they choose based on convenience for them.

This is where the disconnect happens

The doctor may want:

  • more comprehensive care

  • higher-value cases

  • a different mix of patients

But the practice is positioned for something else.

So the results don’t match the intention and they won't.

This is not about needing more patients.

It’s about alignment.

Who you attract…and what you want to do…need to match.

If they don’t:

  • the schedule fills with the wrong things

  • the team stays busy

  • and growth doesn’t look the way you expected or wanted

What I’d look at

Not everything.

Just this:

👉 If your last 20 new patients walked in today…
would you want more just like them?

That answer will tell you a lot.

There are many layers to your marketing ecosystem. They became harder to see the more successful you become.

And once you see what's operating among the layers…you can't unsee it.

Schedule a quiet conversation here.
